#19 Sophia McDermott

As a self described small scrawny runt, suffering from severe asthma, an 11 year old Aussie girl asked her mom to help her change her medical treatment. At that young age Sophia McDermott knew that she was only being made sicker. Her mother got Sophia started on a more holistic approach for treating her asthma and the changes that approach made were incredible.

That small scrawny runt went on to become an elite gymnast and an incredible child athlete. But when at age 18 her gymnastics career ended due to a shoulder injury, Sophia went on a journey to find a sport that challenged her both physically and mentally.

At the age of 21 she found those challenges in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and knew instantly that she had found her calling. She set enormous goals for herself all of which she has met along her journey. Sophia has won multiple championships and became the first female bjj black belt in her homeland of Australia, a goal she set for herself on her first day of jiu jitsu.

But everything wasn't always easy for Sophia. After decades in a male-dominated sport Sophia has endured her share and more of discrimination and harassment and she now has set her sites on making bjj a place where women can train in a safe and empowering environment.

Sophia's businesses, Sophia FIT and her new venture Girls On Top have already set this goal in motion. With her rebel attitude, entrepreneurial spirit, determination, and perseverance, there is no doubt that Sophia will achieve this goal as well.
