Karel Pravec would regularly defeat a younger, more athletic, and larger training partner. That partner named Karel "The Silver Fox" because of Karel's grey hair and his ability to outfox his teammates. And after more than 25 years on the mats, Karel has been teaching others how to outfox their own competition and has created some of the most incredible Jiu Jitsu practitioners on the east coast.
Karel started his martial arts journey with Tae Kwon Do in 1986 at the age of 23, but it wasn't until 1991 that he first tried Jiu Jitsu. That year he attended a Jiu Jitsu seminar hosted by the Gracie family and wanted to learn a little bit of Jiu Jitsu in case he ever found himself on the ground. Over the next couple of years, he attended more seminars as BJJ was not yet available in his area, combining his new ground skills with his already accomplished striking game. Then in 1993, he started training under Renzo Gracie and shortly thereafter began training solely BJJ.
Karel dedicated himself to BJJ and in 2006 he received his Black Belt under Renzo. That was a big year for Karel, not only did he become a Black Belt but he also began an accomplished competition career (at 40 years old), and opened what would become his incredibly successful Silver Fox BJJ in New Jersey.
Now the owner of two academies, The Silver Fox has also become a successful author, publishing the book Fluid BJJ: Scrawny "Middle-Aged" Guy's Guide to Getting Submissions. Along with his book, Karel produces highly entertaining and informative videos on his Youtube channel, SilverFoxBJJ, and has several instructional videos on BJJ Fanatics.
